Hari Raya Aidilfitri
Muslims around the world celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri (also known as Idul Fitri or Idil Fitri in other countries). Aidilfitri literally translates to Celebration Day, after a month of holy fasting, which is referred to as Ramadhan month.
During Ramadhan (the fasting period), you can see many colourful and aromatic roadside stalls (Bazaar Ramadhan) can be found in Kuala Lumpur and elsewhere in Malaysia. Here, you can sample a delightful array of traditional Malay dishes and delicacies for the breaking of the daily fast.
Bazaar Ramadhan is held every evening (from 5pm to 8pm) at designated places. During the fasting month, many hotels will also provide great dining opportunities to feast on Malay cuisine at special prices.
The end of Ramadhan (a month long dawn to dusk fasting) marks the beginning of Hari Raya celebration. And, it's a time for reunion and seeking forgiveness.
The day starts with the morning prayers at the mosques. After the prayers, the Muslims will ask for forgiveness and be forgiven by family members and fellow Muslims. Families will visit graves and children will seek forgiveness from elders.
Many of them hold ‘Open Houses’ to welcome guests and friend to enjoy their celebration with a generous spread of traditional food and delicacies. The Hari Raya celebrations last well into the end of the month, giving you a fascinating insight into the Malay culture and the imprint of the Muslim religion upon it.
