Kiting in Kuala Lumpur

Kite flying is not strictly a child's play! Adults -- yes, you and your family -- can enjoy it too. And you can kiting in Kuala Lumpur!

To enjoy this fun-filled activity, you can go to the Kepong Metropolitan Park located in the north outskirt of the city. This recreational park is accessible through the Middle Ring Road II (MRR II), just about 5km from Batu Caves heading towards the Kepong town. The park is on your left.

Kepong Metropolitan Park

Kepong Metropolitan Park is blessed with a hilly terrain and surrounding a gorgeous lake. Thus, the park is quite windy all year round. So, it is a suitable place for all kiting - whether you fly single-liners or stunt-kites (or sport kites).

The best time to fly kites here is during the weekend, from 5.00 to 6.00pm. If you happen to drive along the Middle Ring Road II at these hours, you'll be amazed by the sheer number of kites you can find on a windy day! The scene of kites flying looks like hundreds of tiny colorful dots embracing the evening sky. It's a really amazing scene!

Kiting for Parents & Kids

Please be caution while driving near the park. The kites scene is fabulous but please keep safety first. This is particularly important because traffic jam normally happens as you're approaching the Kepong Metropolitan Park.

There is a huge parking lot on the eastern side entrance and about one kilometre down the road, there is another entrance with car parks. Both the car parks are linked by the main park.

Do You Know?

The lifting force of all kites is produced by deflecting the air downward, the resulting change in momentum producing an upward force. The reason for this is that the air traveling over the top of the curved surface of the kite is going faster than the air passing underneath.

Fast-moving air creates less pressure; this means there is more pressure underneath the kite, and this helps to force it upwards.

Both modern and traditional kites can be seen here. From paper kites to modern sport kites that are made from waterproof fibre and tough ripstops.

And there are a variety of colors, shape and sizes! From arm-length miniature single-liners to giant sleds measuring tens of metres long!

If you are here without a kite, you easily buy one at the park. There are many kite suppliers around the park! There are all sort of kites that you can choose. Dragons, cartoon characters, swallows, mermaids, octopuses, bees, butterflies, air planes or sharks. Just pick one!

According to one of the kite seller, price of kites range from RM5 to RM55 each, depend on size and design.

So... what are you waiting for? Let's kiting in Kuala Lumpur! It's fun to kite and also watching other people kiting.

I have been passing the Kepong Metropolitan Park by car on many weekends. And.. I was delighted every time I saw all sort of kites, small and large, in plain and vibrant colours.... flying high in the sky. But due to the traffic jam, I never stop to have a closer look.

On a fine Saturday evening, me and Zaly rode our motorbike and head to the Kepong Metropolitan Park. Click here to read my story.
