Hack in The Box

A team of U.S. Army hackers will attend the Hack In The Box (HITB) Security Conference 2007 in Kuala Lumpur later this year, seeking redemption after falling short at a hacker competition in Dubai earlier this month.

The Army Strong team was drawn from members of the 2nd Battalion of the U.S. Army's 1st Information Operations Command (Land). The team was unable to complete the entry-level round, called Level 0, in a capture the flag (CTF) competition held by HITB in Dubai this month, according to Dhillon Andrew Kannabhiran, founder and chief executive officer of Hack In The Box.

Unlike other CTF competitions that require teams to attack other servers while defending their own, the HITB contest in Dubai only required teams to attack servers and retrieve files, called flags, that were used to score points. Participants in the contest were also allowed to attack each other, but denial-of-service attacks were banned.

Hack In The Box has yet to announce details of the CTF contest planned for the Kuala Lumpur conference, which will be held from September 3 to 6.

Limit on Hand Luggage

Effective May 21, liquids, aerosols or gels (LAGs) in airline passengers’ hand luggage will be limited to 100ml per item on all international flights departing from Malaysia.

LAGs carried in containers larger than 100ml will not be allowed, even if the container is partially filled and these containers must be placed in a transparent, re-sealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity of one liter.

The bags measuring 20cm by 20cm will be provided free of charge to passengers for the first three to six months of implementation, after which passengers must get it by themselves from any supermarket.

Kamaruddin said the containers must fit comfortably in the bag and that the bag should be presented for X-ray screening separately from other hand luggage.

Exemptions will be made for medicine, baby milk/food and special dietary requirements needed during the flight, but those carrying medicine or special dietary would need to show proof for verification purposes.

LAGs purchased at duty free shops or on board the aircraft are exempted from this, but the items must be packed in a different sealed tamper-evident plastic bag with the receipt attached.

The bag will be provided at the retailers expense at all points-of-purchase that sell LAGs and the receipt attached must be for the day of travel or transit. This bag is also much larger and completely different from the transparent, re-sealable plastic bag.

Kamaruddin said airport staff would be on hand during the initial stage to assist passengers who might not be familiar with the process and added that the smaller re-sealable bag, but not the tamper-evident bag, could be reused.

The new rule followed recommendations by the International Civil Aviation Organisation that was issued to all Contracting States on Dec 11, 2006.

Countries which have implemented such restrictions include the United States, Britain, European United nations, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and the Philippines with China starting on May 1 and Singapore on May 8.

The airports in Malaysia where this ruling will take effect are KLIA, Penang, Langkawi, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, Miri, Redang, Tioman and Malacca.

DBKL Cultural Troupe

Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) duties are not just about sweeping roads, cleaning drains and cutting trees. There are other aspects to the local authority’s role including show-casing Malaysia’s multi ethnic culture to the world via its cultural dance troupe.

The troupe has been working non-stop to display Malaysia’s culture to the world. At times, they are even required to travel overseas to promote Malaysia as a choice travel destination.

The dancers, however, are used to performing for all sorts of events and at unusual venues, too.

Most times they perform at hotels and convention centres, but they have also performed on the wet soggy fields of Dataran Merdeka or along Bangsar’s Telawi Street.

And they don’t mind because this is what they do best.

The dancers are professional performers from Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) cultural troupe. The cultural troupe comes under the local authority’s cultural, arts, and sports department.

Comprising 19 male dancers, 27 female dancers, three choreographers, five trainers, three costume directors, one make-up artist and 12 traditional musicians, the troupe plays an important role in showcasing Malaysia’s multi-cultural dances to the world.

While the dancers have been trained to focus on traditional Malay dance forms, they can also perform modern and cultural dances of other ethnic groups and they have travelled to different parts of the world to participate in Folklore Dance and Music Festivals.

According to Ramly, the cultural troupe was established in 1988 with only five traditional musicians, 16 dancers and one choreographer.

About KL Crimes

The crime index for the first three months of the year rose by 10.6% and police have identified several reasons.

The increase in the number of people coming forward to lodge reports following the public’s confidence in the police was one of the reasons for the increase in the crime index.

Other reasons were the migration of people from rural areas to the city, moral decline in youths and the influx of foreigners.

While the crime index might have risen, the number of crimes reported since January had been dropping steadily.

Just as the crowd of 6,000 hip-hop fans were getting restless after waiting an hour and a half for their star to appear, energetic rapper Kanye West burst onto stage and went straight into the hit song Diamonds from Sierra Leone.

The six-time Grammy-award-winning rapper and record producer then kept the crowd at Stadium Negara pumping all the way, not skipping a beat as he performed hits like Gold Digger and Touch the Sky.

Opening local acts Two Phat and the Kartel Gang warmed the audience up for the first half hour, before West, 29, took over for the next hour and 15 minutes, performing hits from his albums The College Dropout and Late Registration.

Fans sang along to Through the Wire, Jesus Walks and Heard 'em Say, the artiste's all-time favourite song.

West performed with a seven-piece female orchestra, six of whom were Malaysians.

Kuala Lumpur was the Kanye's only stop in South-East Asia, as part of his Touch the Sky tour.
