International Fireworks Competition
You can watch fireworks night by night at the Malaysia International Fireworks Competition in Putrajaya from Aug 18 to Sept 2.
The stage is currently being set for Malaysia, Australia, Italy and Japan to compete in the first competition of its kind in the region.
Each nation would put up a 20-minute display at 10.30pm to be judged on architecture, synchronisation and colours.
The music-coordinated displays will illuminate the night sky over the Seri Gemilang Bridge. A total of 3,500 cannons measuring between 5cm and 40cm will be positioned at strategic spots for a mesmerizing show.
Those who station themselves at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre will have a good view with the caféteria offering the best vantage point to view the 5,000 to 6,000 different effects each night.
Due to the high cost, there will be no rehearsals. But as an indication of the total cost involved, one show like this in your own backyard should set you back by about US$200,000 (RM720,000).
Furtado said the competition and shows would go on even during rain and would only be halted if there was a series of lightning or strong winds over 35kmh.

Stay Outside KL
The Tourism Ministry is encouraging foreign tourists to stay in cities just outside Kuala Lumpur as the city's hotels are facing a shortage of rooms as occupancy hovers at 98 per cent.
You could stay in Shah Alam, Nilai and Seremban.
The shortage of rooms occurred as many tourists, especially Arabs, preferred to stay longer in the country, he told a news conference held to announce the KL International Tattoo 2007.
Arab tourists come in groups of seven to 17 people and they travel first class or business class. We have to always work hard to ensure that they have every facility which they require (as tourists).
He also said that military bands from 13 countries including Malaysia would participate in the KL International Tattoo 2007 to be held at the Merdeka Stadium from Sept 7 to 9.
The tattoo is being organised jointly by the Armed Forces and the Tourism Ministry at a cost of RM9 million, he said.

More than 100,000 local and foreign tourists have enjoyed the many attractions of Putrajaya by cruising on the Putrajaya Lake since 2003. The annual growth rate ranges from 10% to 15%.
It was timely therefore to introduce more dining boats to complement the existing vessels known as Daun and Belimbing.
On Aug 2, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Zulhasnan Rafique launched two new dining boats named Sebarau and Kelah, after two species of exotic freshwater fish inhabiting the lake.
The Sebarau and Kelah are catamarans measuring 24 metres each with upper decks to allow passengers to feel the wind in their faces. Each vessel accommodates 60 passengers, buffet or fine-dining style.
Penang-based company Betara Cemara built the boats costing a total of RM12mil.

Central Park-Style Forest
Taman Rimba Alam is located in Precinct 15, sharing boundaries with the Diplomatic Precinct in Precinct 14 on one end and with Kampung Tengah and Kampung Limau Manis near Dengkil on the other.
When fully open, Taman Rimba Alam would feature a total of 423 species of trees. Of the number, 318 species have been planted so far.

The dirt paths snaking through the forest will be retained to serve as nature trails during guided tours for visitors while campsites have also been identified. A forest education centre and lookout tower will be built.
There are plans to house the Putrajaya Mounted Police Stables within a small section of the park.

AirAsia HK-KL Flight
AirAsia Bhd is expected to fly to Hong Kong from Kuala Lumpur by next January, three years after it chose Macau for its first destination in China, instead of Hong Kong, due to lower airport charges.
In 2004, Hong Kong lost out to Macau in cutting a deal with AirAsia. It was Macau’s willingness to structure its business model to suit the low-cost airlines’ needs that won AirAsia over.
However, things have changed over the years as airports are clamouring to lure budget carriers with lower usage charges.
There are 85 international airlines providing about 760 scheduled passenger and all-cargo flights each day between Hong Kong and some 150 destinations.
Low-cost airline services are the fastest growing segment of the industry worldwide, with the likes of Southwest Airlines in the US and Ryanair and easyJet in Europe growing much faster than the traditional carriers.
Currently, budget travellers wanting to go to Hong Kong can opt for AirAsia’s thrice daily KL-Macau service. Nevertheless, even when AirAsia starts flying direct to Hong Kong, it expects healthy loads for its flights to Macau, he added.
