One Merdeka Eve Event In KL

Only one Merdeka Eve event will be held in the federal capital this year, at the Merdeka Stadium, because it is an important historical event for the country celebrating its 50th anniversary of independence this year.

The government would not allow any other public Merdeka Eve celebration on the night of Aug 30 here. This was to ensure that the people could focus their attention fully on the event at the Merdeka Stadium.

Previously, Merdeka Eve events were held at several popular spots such as the Twin Towers, the Bukit Bintang commercial and tourism area and Bangsar.

Putrajaya Nightlife

Contrary to common perception, there is life in Putrajaya after nightfall.

The Esplanade at Alamanda Putrajaya has been lively since May following the launch of Live Music @ Esplanade.

Hot bands like Estranged, Nitrus and Pop Shuvit performed at the launch while radio stations HotFM and FlyFM also joined in the fun and excitement with a two-day live outside broadcast.

Live Music @ Esplanade was introduced to draw more youths and families to the fountain area as an added attraction to the shopping mall.

Bands perform from 8pm to 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays as well as 5pm to 7pm on Sundays with brief intervals. All performances are free.

The best views of the permanent stage overlooking the fountain are from Starbucks, The Coast, Penang Village, Manhattan Fish Market and Secret Recipe.

The al fresco dining curve is well shielded from the rain while it is also possible to enjoy strains of music from indoors.

To maintain the upbeat tempo of the launch, Alamanda is featuring a new group every month. It is Havoc’s turn this June.

Alamanda will have more to offer next year when Golden Screen Cinemas starts operating at the annexe.

Chicken Rice Worth RM5,888

The Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur is offering The Most Expensive Chicken Rice in the World, featuring a private plane trip to Ipoh, the birthplace of chicken rice and the adventure of a lifetime for RM5,888.

The luxurious package for two also includes a two-night stay in their executive suite, a tour of Ipoh Old Town and a good portion of authentic Ipoh chicken rice.

Following an airplane wing breakfast on the tarmac, guests on board a Trinidad four-seater aircraft will have with them a personal captain, under whose supervision they have the thrill of flying the aircraft themselves.

Passengers fly by Kuala Lumpur’s iconic Petronas Twin Towers before setting course over 200km of Malaysian tropical countryside to Ipoh.

The chicken is prepared using an intricate hot and cold dunking method which helps it achieve its perfect succulence.

Ipoh chicken rice, a closely guarded recipe of the town folk, is accompanied by bean sprouts tossed with fragrant soy and garlic-oil sauce. Ipoh bean sprouts are legendary for their thickness and crunchiness and cultivated using fresh water from Ipoh’s limestone hills.

For the excursion’s finale, guests drive through Ipoh’s charming old town which transports visitors back in time to the tin mining era.

They can also take a short stroll to the pomelo stalls for a taste of the bitter-sweet juicy fruit, to round up the authentic Malaysian experience.

Also included in the package is access to the Traders Club lounge, Subang International Airport transfers, complimentary late check-out and complimentary breakfast, beverages and evening cocktails, suit pressing, shoe shine and unlimited broadband Internet access.

The package, which ends on Dec 30, is subject to availability.

Kuala Lumpur Flooded

Constant rainfall last Sunday, June 10, saw two rivers breaking their banks, while drains overflowed and inundated low-lying roads, homes and buildings.

Besides houses and shops, the Industrial Court which is housed in the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, the Dataran Merdeka car park and the basement car parks of several hotels along Jalan Sultan Ismail were also affected.

It will take three days to clean up the Dataran Merdeka basement alone.

The floodwaters had receded by early Monday morning.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has now asked for all projects to prevent floods in the federal capital, especially the Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel or SMART Project, to be speeded up.

The RM1.9bil project, if it had been in place, would have prevented Sungai Klang bursting its banks at the Masjid Jamek area on Sunday night.

Although SMART's road tunnel portion has been opened to traffic, its flood diversion component will only be operational next month, when 200 dams and retention ponds, now being built, are ready.

MU Cancelled Tour

Manchester United have scrapped plans to visit Malaysia as part of their Far East tour. United had been invited to play in Kuala Lumpur on July 27 by the Malaysian government as part of the country's 50th anniversary celebrations.

But confirmation of their visit drew an instant attack from the Asian Football Confederation, who felt United's presence would overshadow the Asia Cup, for which Malaysia are one of four co-hosts.

With FIFA president Sepp Blatter lending his weight to the AFC's argument, United chief executive David Gill flew out to Kuala Lumpur last week in an attempt to resolve the impasse, only to discover the Red Devils could not play in Malaysia without the AFC's permission, something the Premier League champions were previously unaware of.

Further negotiations have since taken place but with the AFC determinedly sticking to their stance, United have now bowed to the inevitable, a decision which is sure to upset their thousands of fans in the region.

United remain fully committed to completing the first three legs of the tour, which takes them to Tokyo, Seoul and Macau.

They are also investigating the possibility of playing a fourth match - almost certainly in China - although arranging a fixture at such short notice could be tricky.

The alternative is to fly home immediately after their game in Macau on July 23 and play an extra friendly when they return home before their clash with Serie A champions Inter Milan at Old Trafford on August 1.

Warning for Taxi Tout

Travel agencies doubling as taxi touts better beware because the Government is keeping an eye on their activities.

Some agencies have been engaged in touting at the KL International Airport and other ports of entry to "win over" tourists who had booked their travel here through other firms.

For instance, they charge the tourists, using their taxi touts, as much as US$200 (RM680) for a ride into town and then ask them to claim back from the agency they had originally booked their travel with.

If the agencies are found guilty of such activities, Road Transport Department (JPJ) can revoke their operating licences.

Federer & Sampras in Kuala Lumpur

World number one Roger Federer will play Pete Sampras in an exhibition match in Kuala Lumpur in November to celebrate Malaysia's 50th year of independence.

Swiss Federer, who trails the American's record of 14 grand slam titles by four, will take on the 35-year-old former world number one in a match billed as the 'Clash of the Times'.

Federer and Sampras faced each other just once on the ATP Tour when the Swiss won a five-set match in the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2001 to end the American's 31-match unbeaten run at the All England Club.

The exhibition match on Nov 22 is part of the Merdeka (Independence) Tennis Challenge that includes the inaugural Malaysia Open Championship and a second-tier Challenger tour event.
