Terry Fox Run KL
More than 10,000 Malaysians and foreigners gathered at Lake Gardens recently for this year’s edition of the Terry Fox Run KL 2007.
Some ran and walked while others skated or cycled in the two different courses; a 4 km route (for children) and an 8km route (for adults) in similar white t-shirts.
The exclusively designed Terry Fox Run t-shirts were sold before and during the run with funds raised channelled to the Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF) Malaysia.
After the run, which started at 9am, participants were treated to games and activities and a light breakfast at the park area.
The fun-filled non-competitive family event was the 17th and was named after Canadian Terry Fox, who was diagnosed with bone cancer and had to have his right leg amputated above the knee.
While in hospital, Terry was so moved by the suffering of cancer patients, especially the children, that he resolved to run across Canada (some 8,500km) to raise money for cancer research. His journey was called the Marathon of Hope.
Fox, an amputee, ran a marathon (42km) a day for 143 consecutive days - a total distance of 5,373km. However, he was forced to abandon the run as the cancer spread to his lungs and Fox died at the age of 21.
Before he died, he knew that a fund-raising event would be held each year, with the same objectives as the Marathon of Hope - to help find a cure for cancer.
Since 1981, the Terry Fox Run has raised more than RM1.3 billion and attracts over 2 million runners each year. The Terry Fox Foundation requires that the funds raised be used for cancer research in the country where the Run is organised.

Jackie Chan's Cafe
Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan has set up shop in Kuala Lumpur!
No, he is not opening a cinema for his famous martial art films. Instead, the popular plucky actor has opened a coffeehouse named after himself called the Jackie Chan’s Cafe.
The spirited Jackie was in town recently to launch the cafe on the Muse Floor (Level 6) of the Starhill Gallery.
Hundreds of his fans were at the Starhill Gallery to greet him when he arrived to open his first lifestyle cafe in Malaysia.
Jackie, who has made a few of his action movies in Malaysia, has pledged that 2% of the cafe’s profit would be donated to local charitable organisations for disadvantaged children.
To commemorate the opening of the cafe, Jackie sportingly put on an apron and made a cup of coffee for Yeoh.
Jackie also presented prizes to winners of the United Buddy Bears colouring contest held earlier that day and matched the donations collected on the day with a ringgit-for-ringgit contribution.
The Starhill Gallery management also pledged a similar ringgit-for-ringgit contribution to the total raised to triple the collection.

A Journey Through Time
Exclusive watch and jewellery brands will come together soon for A Journey Through Time, an inaugural luxury watch and jewellery showcase in Kuala Lumpur.
Hosted by Starhill Gallery, the showcase will be held from Dec 3 - 12 in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2007 and Malaysia's 50th independence anniversary.
The showcase, which is co-organised by the Secretariat Shopping Malaysia and fully-supported by Tourism Malaysia, positions Malaysia as a preferred one-stop destination for timepieces and jewellery acquisitions.
Not many people know that the biggest watch retail centre is in Kuala Lumpur instead of Hong Kong. Furthermore, Malaysia is a duty-free country for some of the best luxury goods.
Starhill Gallery currently hosts over 100 luxury brands on its Adorn and Indulge Floor, and houses some of the largest stand-alone watch boutiques in the world.
Top brands like Van Cleef and Arpels, Boucheron, Audemars Piquet, Richard Mille, Korloff, Jaegar-LeCoultre and many more will participate in the showcase.
Apart from the dazzling display of jewellery and watches, celebrity guests, brand ambassadors and renowned watchmakers are expected to grace the showcase.
It will kick off with a Gala Night hosted by YTL Corporation and Forbes on the first night, and a second gala the next night hosted by Tourism Malaysia.
